Lance Burdett: Challenging Our Challenges

Following a successful career as a construction manager, Lance Burdett spent 22 years as a cop, 13 of those as a crisis negotiator. He brings together experience from training in New Zealand, Australia, England and the USA with the elite units of police, prisons, emergency services, the military, and the FBI. His programmes are grounded in neuroscience, emotional intelligence and positive psychology. Lance has a Master of Arts majoring in Terrorism, Safety & Security, a Diploma in Policing, a Diploma in Business Studies, and is completing a Diploma in Positive Psychology and Wellbeing. He published the bestselling books Behind the Tape and Dark Side of the Brain. Lance also makes regular media appearances.

Lance will be here to talk about why people are becoming overwhelmed and sometimes emotional, how to manage uncertainty and adversity, how to reduce worry, and the importance of taking positive action. He will also talk about how to identify when people are struggling with negative thoughts or are potentially suicidal, how to safely engage with that person and steer them towards professional help. Lance will finish with a few simple tips on how to stay alert and energised, how to switch off at the end of a busy day, how to get to sleep within just a few breaths, and how to stop waking between 3 and 4 in the morning with feelings of stress.

This is an R18 event. Spaces are limited.

Please note: If we are in Alert Level 2, this session will move to a virtual presentation.

3 Steps for Life by St John

Nearly 2000 New Zealanders suffer from a cardiac arrest (heart stoppage) outside of hospital each year and most of these happen in their homes. This is four times the national road toll and yet public awareness remains low.

St John’s 3 Steps for Life is designed to give all New Zealanders the confidence and awareness to act when somebody suffers a cardiac arrest by: 1) Calling 111; 2) Starting CPR; and 3) Using an AED (automated external defibrillator).

Applying CPR and rapid defibrillation can increase a patient’s chances of survival by up to 40%. But for every minute without CPR or defibrillation, a patient’s chance of survival falls by 10-15%.

Come and learn how you can help save a life by learning 3 Steps for Life.

Drop-in, no booking required.

Please note: These sessions will only take place in Alert Level 1.
