Tauranga Library is on the move

Tauranga City Council has exciting plans underway to redevelop the civic precinct in the centre of Tauranga.

This is all part of the wider strategy to transform and revitalise the city centre into a place that our community is proud of, and that people want to visit.

To make way for the new civic precinct, Tauranga Library is relocating from its current site at Willow Street to a new, interim site - He Puna Manawa (formerly the Goddard’s Centre) – located between Grey Street and Devonport Road.

To allow for our extensive collection of resources and books to be relocated to He Puna Manawa, the library will be closed from 4pm on Sunday 6 March, and will re-open at He Puna Manawa on Monday 4 April.

You’ll be able to drop items off at the after-hours slot at Willow Street until 28 March, and you can still access Greerton, Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa Library, the Mobile library, as well as our Digital Library.

Tauranga City Council has plans to redevelop, revitalise, and transform the civic precinct in the city centre. The library’s existing building on Willow Street is going to be demolished to make way for the development, which will include a new library.

Tauranga Library will be relocating from its current location on Willow Street to its temporary location at He Puna Manawa, 21 Devonport Road. You’ll be able to access He Puna Manawa from both Devonport Road and Grey Street.

The library will close at 4pm on Sunday 6 March and will re-open again at He Puna Manawa on Monday 4 April.

The library needs to close to allow library staff to relocate the extensive collection of books and resources to the new site.

From Monday 7 March to Sunday 27 March, items can be returned to the after-hours slot at Tauranga Library.

From Monday 28 March to Sunday 3 April, the after-hours slot at Tauranga library will not be available for returning items. During this period, please return your items to Greerton, Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, or the Mobile Library.

While Tauranga Library is closed, we encourage you to check out the comprehensive array of books on offer at Greerton, Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa Library, or you can visit the Mobile Library when it’s near you.

Yes, while Tauranga Library is closed you can still access books through our Digital Library.

Yes, your membership is valid at all our community libraries (Tauranga, Greerton, Mount Maunganui Pāpāmoa, and the Mobile Library).

Ngā Wāhi Rangahau/Research Collections will close to the public from 4pm on Saturday 5 February. You can access the digitised archives online 24/7 at Pae Korokī

If you have any research queries during the closure period, these can be emailed to Research@tauranga.govt.nz

Customer access to the physical archives is expected to be available at an offsite location by appointment from early April. Microfilm and genealogy resources will be available at He Puna Manawa from Monday 4 April.

From Monday 7 February, JP services will no longer be available at all library and Council sites until further notice. JP contact details

The library carpark on Hamilton Street will remain open until the demolition of the Willow Street buildings begins.

When the fit out of He Puna Manawa is completed in April, you’ll be able to enter the library from both Grey Street and Devonport Road, so parking around both those areas will ensure easy access. There are existing mobility spaces available close to both entrances, and we’re also in the process of adding a further mobility space on Grey Street.

Just up the road, there is the Spring Street parking building and a few minutes’ walk away, there is the Strand carpark as well as the parking building on Elizabeth Street.

From Friday 18 February no new holds can be placed for pick up at Tauranga Library. An alternative library will need to be selected as the location to pick up a held item. Existing holds, ordered before Friday 18 February, will continue to be available for pick up from Tauranga Library until Sunday 6 March.
