Matariki Hao Tāngata - Matariki, a Remembrance
The creativity on display during Matariki is always inspiring and helps to make it a definite highlight of the year for us. Tauranga City Libraries is so proud to once again be a part of this city-wide initiative and we invite you to take part in as many of the events on offer as you can.
Our contribution to the 2019 programme begins with Matariki Hao Tāngata – Matariki, a Remembrance, a photographic exhibition of Māori portraits taken from the 1970s–1990s.
This beautiful retrospective of black and white photography is from Kapua Joy Bennett (Ngāti Ranginui, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui). Kapua discovered photography as an artistic medium while attending Wellington Polytechnic Design School in 1969. For more than three decades she was a prolific photographer. She captured thousands of images on subjects such as Māori life, street scenes, protests and quiet domestic moments. She also published a calendar: Kuia – Tauranga Moana in 1994. Her black and white portraits of kuia in their 80s and 90s showed her gift for photographing kaumātua and having them open up to her.
This year the Matariki exhibition and calendar includes new portraits of kuia and kaumātua and of others who have passed on. We remember those gathered up and returned in the season of Matariki.
Matariki Hao Tāngata – Matariki, a Remembrance runs from Friday, 7 June to Friday, 5 July.
