Book Launch: Wiremu Weka Treks the Alps by Kinsa Hays
Wiremu Weka, chasing his stolen treasures, sneaks aboard the famous TranzAlpine express train, finding adventures as he crosses the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
Young readers (8-13) can trek along with this smart bird as he hangs out with the locals, stealing stuff, and getting into other trouble. His usual response? “Oh, bugs ’n beetles!”
Fast-paced and humorous, Wiremu Weka Treks the Alps is lavishly illustrated with photographs and maps, and packed with facts to educate while it entertains. Author Kinsa Hays travelled around New Zealand-Aotearoa, North and South, for over a decade, and had many adventures of her own. At Lake Brunner a cheeky weka ran off with her purple sandal, a story that earned her an international prize. Two kea ganged up on her at Arthur’s Pass village, and stole her lunch. She watched kea keenly observe children sliding in the snow at Porters Pass and imagined how the birds might later have a go.
The endangered birds who feature in Wiremu Weka’s journey are real. Kinsa met none of them because they are so rare. She hopes her story will help young and old to become more aware of their plight and care about their survival.
