Pō Pūrākau ki Tutarawānanga

Bring a torch, come in your pyjamas and enjoy the magic of a fun-filled evening of after-hours 
storytelling in the library. Pani Lawson will bring the evening alive with stories and shadow puppets, then you will get to enjoy some kai with your whānau before taking part in a short activity.

For ages 3–10. Parents/adults are encouraged to participate but do not need to book a ticket.

Matariki Kohi Kāri

Thursday, 10 June – Friday, 9 July

Celebrate the wonders around us here in Tauranga Moana. Visit your local library and pick up a set of Kohi Kāri—each library has a different set of cards to collect. Once you have your cards, the scavenger hunt begins! Search Tauranga Moana for the items on your cards and discover their stories. Can you collect the whole set? 

A different set of cards can be collected from the following libraries: Tauranga, Greerton, Pāpāmoa, Mount Maunganui, and the Mobile Library. 

Send us a photo of yourself out on the hunt with your cards to be in to win one of four $50 Whitcoulls vouchers! Photos can be emailed to anna.hodson@tauranga.govt.nz, please provide a contact name and phone number. One entry per participant per branch library card set.  Prizes will be drawn on the 18th of July 2021.

In celebration of Matariki, we will be creating a light-up constellation canvas using LEDs and copper tape. Come and hear the story of the stars of Matariki, learn how to find them in the night sky and create your piece of techie art to take home. 

For ages 7-10.

Come and hang with us! We enjoy something different each session—this time, in celebration of Matariki, we will be creating a light-up constellation canvas using LEDs and copper tape.

Puppets with Pani

Join us for this drop-in activity with guest facilitator, storyteller Pani Lawson. Come along and make your own puppets to create your own stories or recreate a treasured Māori story. Younger children will need an accompanying adult to help complete this craft. No registration necessary, just drop in!


Mātauranga Matariki – Pronunciation Workshop

Tuesday, 15 June from 5:30-6:30 pm

Matariki has become a time of revitalisation and resurgence of Te Reo Māori and Mātauranga Māori.  Come along and hear the stories, learn the history and speak the names of ngā whetū o Matariki, the stars of Matariki, through our Mātauranga Matariki introductory pronunciation workshop.

For all ages. Light refreshments will be provided.

Matariki Kite Day

Fergusson Park
Sunday, 4 July from 12noon–4pm

Our skies will once again be filled with kites of all shapes, colours and sizes in celebration of Matariki! Wrap up warm and bring your whānau, a hot chocolate and a kite of your own along to the beach side of Fergusson Park to join the winter festivities. A variety of food and beverage vendors will be available on the day.
